Abstract

This paper explores in spatial terms, some factors that affect both the non-randomness in the subnational distribution of the sub-national living conditions index, and the existence of large differentials in values between the central municipalities and periphery municipalities. The analysis is limited to the 1116 continental municipalities of Colombia, and using Shape files from the Geographic Information System for Planning and Territorial Ordering, which belongs to Agustin Codazzi Geographic institute. Under the premises of the New Economic Geography and using both univariate and multivariate techniques, exploratory data analysis is performed and using spatial econometrics tools, some mathematical models are formulated, specified and estimated. The estimation of the optimal proposal suggests that the living conditions index is inversely related to the rate of basic needs and directly with both the generation rate equity as with urbanization rate.
