Abstract

While working with regions is what distinguishes the Regional Economy of other branches of applied economics, many economists have not paid attention to the definition of the concept of region. This paper proposes an extensive review of the literature, from classical to newer approaches to revise what has been the concept of region that authors have proposed or implemented. On that basis it is a concrete proposal for regional empirical analysis in our time trying to synthesize the most important contributions made by the various authors and is based on the importance in today’s economies of agglomeration externalities associated. At the end of the article, the proposal for the Spanish economy is expressed. Applying this concept to other Latin American region can provide interesting results and provide a fruitful line of research.
