Abstract

The theory that explains homicidal violence is nurtured. Some trends point to objective causes, such as poverty and social conditions, while others propose that is caused by criminal enterprises. In this paper, a spatial analysis of violence is made, using as an instrument of measuring the homicide rate for the years 2000, 2003 and 2005 to 2010, at the level of municipalities for Valle del Cauca, Cauca and Nariño. Through spatial econometric technique, the hypothesis that homicidal violence is  randomly distributed is contrasted. The results reveal highly contagious hot spots in terms of violence; zones with persistent acts of homicide violence during this period were found, turning Valle del Cauca, a cluster of violence in spatial terms.
