Abstract

This paper shows evidence on an old debate linked to the causal relationship between the business cycle and total factor productivity (TFP) for a group of 15 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, from 1995 through 2015. The impact of the channels by which technological improvements can take place is also analyzed: foreign direct investment (FDI) and the degree of trade openness. The results show a joint causation of the cycle and TFP growth when a lag is considered and only from the cycle to the TFP growth when two lags are taken into account. Other significant results were the growth of capital that is not linked to ICT’s and the ICT capital growth as a cause of TFP variations.
