Abstract

This paper explores the determinants of the internationalization probability in the case of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in some European countries, incorporating typical explanatory variables such as human capital, financing, competitiveness, innovation, governmental support, commercialization, productivity, and finally, the crisis stage. The latter is addressed as an economic variable that has only recently been considered in the literature. A Logit model is used to define the main positive determinants of internationalization, such as long-term agreements, company size, and export financing, to show that the crisis does not prove to be a limiting factor in the process of international expansion, providing evidence of a resilient profile of European SMEs.
